Her music – ranging from country to rock to synth ballads and alternative pop – has made her one of the 21st Century’s most significant, high-achieving artists. And it’s fair to say that Taylor Alison Swift has become an inspirational byword for talent, success and hard work over the course of a career that started when she was just fourteen years old.

How Taylor Swift Followed Her Dream

Growing up on a Christmas tree farm may not be the usual route to global superstardom – although in Taylor’s case it did provide the inspiration for one of the catchiest contemporary Christmas songs, “Christmas Tree Farm”, whose video features family footage of Taylor’s snow-filled childhood.

Taylor started following her dream very early, self-recording covers from the age of eleven. Inspired by a family trip to a LeAnn Rimes concert, she moved to Nashville – the home of country music – and signed a publishing deal aged just fourteen, after she was spotted gigging there at the Bluebird Café.

Four major music genres, two decades and six world tours…

Taylor started as a country singer with albums including her debut, Taylor Swift, in 2006 and Fearless (2008). Songs such as “Teardrops on My Guitar” and “Love Story” became popular on both country and pop radio. In 2010, aged twenty, she became the youngest artist in history to win Album of the Year at The Grammy Awards with her breakout album, Fearless.  In a landmark night, she also picked up awards for Best Country Album and Best Female Country Vocal performance, plus Best Country Song for “White Horse”.

Taylor has become known for her ever-evolving sound; her 2010 album Speak Now added rock influences, while Red explored electronic music. Synth-pop album 1989 (named after the year she was born), released in 2014 saw her lean further into pop. It became her biggest album  and went on to win three of the seven Grammys it was shortlisted for. This included Album of the Year,  with Taylor making history again as the first woman to win this category twice.

10 Facts About Taylor Swift

1. Her first big gig was singing the national anthem before a professional basketball game in Philadelphia.

2. Aged fourteen, she became the youngest person ever signed by Sony/ATV as a songwriter.

3. Singing runs in the family: Taylor’s maternal grandmother, Marjorie Finlay, was an accomplished opera singer. Taylor honoured Marjorie with the track “Marjorie” on her 2020 album, evermore, which features recordings of Marjorie layered into the background vocals.

4. Taylor has released sixteen total full-length albums, which includes twelve original studio albums and four re-recorded (“Taylor’s Version”) albums.

5. Taylor is a proud cat lady, citing her cats as ‘the most influential factor in my life’. Taylor’s three cats, two Scottish folds and a Ragdoll, are named after her favourite TV and film characters: Meredith Gray (Grey’s Anatomy), Olivia Benson (Law & Order: SVU) and Benjamin Button, who featured with her on the cover of TIME’s Person of the Year issue in 2023.

They have also featured in her music videos, adverts, and have other A-list feline fans: Meredith and Olivia appear on a T-shirt worn by Ryan Reynolds’ character in Deadpool.

6. Taylor attended ‘cat school’ to nail playing flirtatious feline Bombalurina in the 2019 movie adaptation of the musical Cats. She was excited to work with legendary composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, which led to them co-writing original song “Beautiful Ghosts” for the film.

7. In 2023, Swift embarked on her monumental Eras Tour – a three-hour spectacle in which she performed music from her eleven studio albums and grossed an unprecedented $2.077 billion in official ticket sales.

8. The 149-show run across 21 countries boasted a total attendance of over 10.1 million people! And it’s estimated that the UK tour dates contributed nearly £1 billion to the local British economy through travel, hospitality and dining. Dan Fleetwood, President of QuestionPro Research and Insights, said in a story for GlobalNewsWire, “If Taylor Swift were an economy, she’d be bigger than 50 countries.”

9. Taylor’s favourite number is thirteen 13 – and she incorporates it anywhere she can. Born on December 13th, her albums Fearless, 1989 and Midnights all have thirteen tracks, and many of her songs have thirteen-second intros, or words and refrains repeated thirteen times. Sometimes, fans need to do some work to find the reference – Lover was released on August 23rd: add eight, two and three and you get… thirteen.

10.  After months of rumours and speculation, superstar couple Taylor Swift and three-time Superbowl champion Travis Kelce tied the knot at New York’s Madison Square Garden on July 3rd 2026. Officiated by Happy Gilmour star Adam Sandler, the couple sported wedding looks by Christian Dior Haute Couture, with Christian Louboutin shoes and Cartier jewellery. In a break with tradition, Taylor chose her brother Austin as her ‘man of honour’; Travis chose his brother and podcast co-host Jason as his best man, and the couple wrote their own vows.

There were reportedly a thousand guests, including some of music, sport and Hollywood’s biggest names, and the reception featured a performance by Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks.

What Can Children Learn From Taylor Swift?

Be Determined

Sixteen-year-old Taylor signed a record deal with Big Machine Records, who went on to release her first six albums. When she signed with Republic Records in 2018, Swift wanted to buy the copyright in her master recordings, but failed to strike a deal. The rights were subsequently sold to talent manager Scooter Braun (who discovered Justin Bieber), who then sold them to an investment fund for a reputed $300 million.

However, as Taylor did retain the music and lyrical copyrights, she had the right to re-record the albums’ songs. By re-recording and releasing the albums (with bonus tracks) as ‘Taylor’s Version’, she ensured she receives both the credit and the revenue from their streams – and the old masters’ owners don’t get a penny. This is just one example of how Taylor is determined to maintain control of her music, making her an advocate for artists’ rights in the process.

Be Generous and Kind

Taylor is a prolific donor – with an estimated $100 million given to charitable causes, food banks, disaster relief funds and even individual fans throughout her career.

In 2011, she donated $70,000 worth of books to her hometown library; she pledged $1 million to Louisiana flood relief in 2016 after floods damaged over 40,000 homes in the state where her 1989 World Tour began, and $5 million to hurricane relief in 2024. She is also a regular supporter of sexual assault charities, such as RAINN and the Joyful Heart Foundation.

During the coronavirus pandemic, Taylor sent personal cheques to struggling Swifties, and she often gives her time visiting fans in hospital, and even making surprise appearances at Swifties’ weddings, bridal showers and engagement parties. She also donated huge sums to foodbanks in every city she visited during her eras tour, including 1,400 foodbanks on her UK leg.

Be Joyful and Have Fun

Taylor takes her work seriously – and has fun with it too.

Taylor told The Washington Post, “When I was 15 and putting together my first album, […] I decided to encode the lyrics with hidden messages using capital letters. That’s how it started, and my fans and I have since descended into colour coding, numerology, word searches, elaborate hints and Easter eggs.”

Including a mention of friendship bracelets in “You’re On Your Own, Kid” sparked endless creativity among Swifties making, gifting and swapping their own, full of references to song titles, lyrics and other Swift arcana.

As well as spotting the number thirteen (as we mentioned above), fans can decode fun clues and puzzles hidden by Taylor in everything from her outfits to her videos, lyrics and social media posts. Hidden messages, hints as to release dates, song and album titles, references to 1989, the year she was born… Swifties have a lot of details to look out for. Clever, ingenious and fun, Taylor takes her creativity to new levels with each release, so watch this space . . .
